Big Pumpkin Nesting Dolls
BIG thanks to school Librarian Susan Middleton for sending me this picture of her Big Pumpkin nesting dolls. She commissioned artist Lauren West to create them and aren't they adorable! I'm so impressed by the creative way this extends my book and engages her students. It tickles me to see my characters come to life in another form.

Celebrating National Day of the Cowboy

It was the National Day of the Cowboy, which is celebrated for an entire week in Redlands, California. Yee-ha!

I read Cowgirl Kate stories, listened to some fine Cowboy music, chatted with local Rodeo Queens, Cynthia Boswell and Sabrina Snowball, and tried to rope a "pretend" bull (got it on the fourth try!) at the Frugal Frigate, a terrific independent children's bookstore.

Happy Women's History Month

March 18, 2011

March is Women's History Month and over at "kidlitblog" they are celebrating all month. Every day a different teacher, author, librarian, or historian, is adding a post about Women's History in Children's Books.

I've been reading the posts every day, learning about all those amazing women they didn't teach us about in school, but should have, and discovering more books to add to my to-read list. So many books, so little time!

I'll be posting about Emma Lazarus on March 26. And suggesting a link to a really wonderful short music-film on Women's History. Don't miss it!

Don't worry about arriving in the middle of March; start from today and read backwards, or go back to March 1 and go in order, or jump around and pick and choose by topic.

Yesterday Maureen Palacios, the wonderful owner of Once Upon a Time hosted a Book Launch and Signing for Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa, Spring Babies. Once Upon a Time, in Montrose, California is the oldest children's book store in the country - no small accomplishment for an independent! It's also the first book store I've ever been to that invited a horse inside - to my utter delight! I just might have to write "Horse in the Store" next. One lucky fan won a raffle for a free pony ride - just for (more…)
